OPERATION ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR!

englishOAE is NATO’s primary maritime operation and is commanded by Maritime Command Naples, Italy. Begun in 2001, the mandate for Active Endeavour has been regularly reviewed and extended; growing to include Maritime Patrol Aircraft and submarines providing increased capability and adding to the information NATO shares with its ALLIES, the shipping industry and civil authorities.

Nato’s presence in the Mediterranean has not only had a significant effect on combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of the Mediterranean’s busy shipping lanes but has greatly enhanced security cooperation with countries in the wider Mediterranean and Black Sea region.

Cooperation with Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR units provides for the safe and secure movement of vessels at sea and reduces the time spent on inspections. Any suspicious behavior at sea might be considered as a potential indication of illegal or terrorist activity. All hailings and boardings are conducted in accordance with the rules of international law and the agreement of the vessel’s Flag state and ship’s Master.
