Significant dates
• On 6 October 2001 the Standing Naval Force Mediterranean deploys to the Eastern Mediterranean to conduct OAE.
• On 26 October 2001 OAE formally begins.
• On 3 February 2003 the North Atlantic Council (NAC) decides to empasize the surveillance by MPA and submarines, supporting units from adjacent NATO countries as well as tankers, and introduces Route Survey as part of the Mines Counter Measures (MCM) operational patern.
• On 4 February 2003 the NAC authorizes an expansion of the area of operation to include the Strait of Gibralatar (STROG).
• On 10 March 2003, STROG Operations begin.
• On 29 April 2003, OAE units commence compliant boarding operations.
• On 16 March 2004 the NAC approved the expansion of the operational area throughout the Mediterranean
• On 09 December 2004, Contacts between NATO and Russian Federation.
• On 21 April 2005, Contacts between NATO and Ukraine.
• On 16 October 2005, Contacts between NATO and Israel.
• On 21 September 2006, Russian Frigate PITLIVIY, hoisting the NATO flag conducted her first boarding under OAE command.
• On 30 March 2007, Ukrainian Navy and CC-MAR NAPLES sign a Technical Memorandum of Understanding (TMOU) to increase their cooperation.
• On 25 May 2007, Ukrainian ship Ternopil joins OAE.

On 06 June 2007, Israeli Navy and CC-MAR NAPLES sign a TMOU.
• On 24 July 2007, Russia signs a TMOU about her contribution to the OAE.
• On 24 July 2007, Contacts between NATO and Albania.
• On 07 February 2008, Albanian Navy and CC-MAR NAPLES sign a TMOU.
• On 24 March 2008, Contacts between NATO and Georgia.
• On 02 June 2008, Contacts between NATO and Morocco.
• On 23 April 2009, Implementation of a new concept of operations, involving a larger number of partners in the operation and facilitating the exchange of informations.

Designed to prevent the movement of terrorists as well as to enhance the security of shipping
in general, OAE is one of the first military actions taken by NATO in response to an invocation of Article 5 of the North Atlantic
Treaty which provides for collective defense.
