Compliant Boardings

cargo vessel On 29 April 2003 OAE conducted the first boarding of vessels in the AOR.

OAE includes the boarding and inspection of indentified vessels under certain circumstances. This extension of original operations is not in response to any specific (identified) threat, but is undertaken as a prudent and resolute commitment to security within the region (Mediterranean), to deter any terrorist initiative at sea.

• This extension of Article 2 on 12 September 2001, in support of the war against terrorism, and demonstrates the commitment of the Alliance to maintaining security and stability in, and the transparent flow of material through, the Alliance Area of Responsibility.

• The boarding of vessels is in accordance with international maritime law and with the coordinated support of national authorities both within and in co-operation with the Alliance. This misson's aim is to continue to support the fight against international terrorism and provide a secure maritime enviroment within the Alliance Area of Responsibility.

• Boardings are conducted in accordance with the national procedures of the boarding ship, and with the agreement of the Flag State of the Master.

• Over 110 boardings have been conducted and 86746 ships challenged (as of MAy 21th 2007).
