Operation Active Endeavour (OAE) is the naval operation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) against terrorism in the Mediterranean Sea.

 

OAEDesigned to prevent the movement of terrorists as well as to enhance the security of shipping in general, OAE is one of the first military actions taken by NATO in response to an invocation of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty which provides for collective defense.

 

OAE is an important contribution to the peace, stability and security of all nations and peoples.

22 October : The Standing Nato Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) begins a patrol period in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The group, including German Ship Schleswig-Holstein, will have the occasion to reassure mariners, showing NATO's continuous engagement in the fight against terrorism.

 

 

 

 

 

TCG Oruc Reis

05 July : The Turkish frigate Oruc Reis interacted with the Egyptian fishing vessel "Abu Ahab" during her patrol in the western Mediterranean. Both crews had a discussion about Operation Active Endeavour and shared their concerns regarding the security in the area and the benefits of OAE for everyone. SNMCMG1 NATO ships are happy to meet other maritime community members, improving mutual knowledge and understanding.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

TCG Oruc Reis

25 June : The Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) initiates a patrol in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The Turkish frigate Oruc Reis is the command ship of the group.

 

 

 

 

 

 

SNMCMG1

21 June : During their patrol in the Western Mediterranean Sea, the SNMCMG1 detected a small overcrowded vessel. Without hampering the conduct of their mission, the NATO ships ensured that the vessel was seaworthy, provided some water to the passengers and informed the Spanish authorities.

 

 

 

 

 

ORP ADM. CZERNICKI

20 May : The Polish ship ADM. CZERNICKI , command ship of the Mine Counter Measure Group 1, is leading the group while performing an OAE patrol in the western Mediterranean Sea. The patrol will be interrupted during their participation in the exercise "Italian Minex 11", but will resume throughout the month of June.

 

 

 

ITS AVIERE5 May : The Italian frigate Aviere heads back to her home port. In company with the German ship Lubeck, which has remained on station, she has performed a patrol in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

21 April : The Standing NATO Mine Counter Measure Group 1 (SNMCMG1) completes a one month long patrol in the Mediterranean Sea. While being specialized in mine hunting, the group has contributed significantly to the general awareness in the area.

 

 

 

Turkish CN-235

07 April : Fight against terrorism in the Mediterranean Sea goes on! While involved in the weapons embargo operation against Libya and the protection of civilian population, NATO still dedicates the necessary assets to monitor the whole Mediterranean Sea, standing ready to detect and disrupt any terrorist activity. Ships are patrolling from West to East, supported by submarine and aircrafts.

 

 

Its Euro

25 March : The frigate Euro is one of OAE's eyes in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The italian ship performs surveillance and control, contacting the mariners in the area and standing ready to react.

 

 

 

 

Adm Locklear and VAdm Veri

10 March : Operation Active Endeavour changes commander. Vice Admiral Veri, from the Italian Navy, takes over from Vice Admiral Gemignani as Commander, Allied Maritime Command Naples (MC Naples), and therefore Commander Operation Active Endeavour. The ceremony was presided by Admiral Locklear, Joint Force Commander, in front of representatives from Mediterranean nations and MC Naples personnel.

 

ITS Etna20 February : After its participation in the Anti-Submarine exercise Proud Manta, the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) resumes its patrol in the western Mediterranean Sea.

 

 

 

 

AWACS02 February : AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control Systems) aircrafts from NATO, usually based inGeilenkirchen (Germany) are deployed in Trapani airbase (Italia). They participate in the continuous aerial surveillance of the Mediterranean Sea, providing in a few hours the situation of the ships sailing in the Mediterranean.

 

 

ContactMohamed Badri25 January : Spanish ship Marques de la Ensenada, which is part of the NATO Maritime Group operating in theWesternMediterranean, rescued the Mohamed Badri, an Algerian fishing vessel which suffered engine breakdown. Technicians from the Spanish ship succeeded in repairing the failure, as an example of NATO operating for everyone's benefit.


 

21 January : SNMG1 begins its sweep focusing on the Western / Central Mediterranean Sea.

 

Lubeck18 January : The Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) is gathering to operate in the Western Mediterranean Sea.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Ternopil18 November : 11 warships (including the Ukrainian frigate Ternopil), with the support of Awacs and Maritime Patrol Aircraft, demonstrates NATO's resolve and operates in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

 

14 November : The Ukrainian warship Ternopil operates in company with NATO ships in vicinity of Crete.

 

22 October : The Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 concentrates OAE efforts in the western Mediterranean. The Group, composed of 8 ships patrols between Gibraltar and Crete.

 

20 September : The Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 pays a port visit in Casablanca to maintain good relationships and improve interoperability with the Moroccan Navy.
